Italian Charms: what is an Italian charm? The complete guide

You see them everywhere on TikTok without knowing what they are. We’ll explain Italian charms in 5 minutes.

You see them everywhere on TikTok, on your friends' wrists, and in charm-building videos. But what exactly is an Italian Charm? We'll explain everything about Italian charms: how they work, the prices, and how to build your first Italian bracelet without getting it wrong.

What exactly is an Italian Charm?

An Italian charm is a small, flat square made of stainless steel, with a design on it: a heart, a star, a leopard, a lemon, or a letter. It's 9 mm wide - about the size of a fingernail.

And here's the key thing to understand: the charms attach to one another, and they are what form the bracelet.

There's no chain underneath. No dangling charms. You place your charms side by side, and they create a flat, smooth bracelet that sits comfortably on your wrist. Nothing swings around, gets caught in your sleeves, or makes any noise.

That's exactly why you can wear it every day without even thinking about it.

How do you build a bracelet?

It's as simple as can be, we promise. Three steps.

1. You choose a base

The base is your starter bracelet. It already comes filled with plain charms - simple charms with no design, in gold or silver. It's your blank canvas, so to speak.

At our store, the base starts at 19,90 €, in gold, silver, or rose gold.

2. You choose your charms

This is the fun part. Choose what speaks to you: a heart, your initial, your favorite animal, your zodiac sign, a vacation memory.

We have more than 500, priced between €4.99 and €5.99 each.

3. You replace it

You remove a plain charm from your base and put your charm in its place. That's it. Repeat as many times as you like.

Some people add 5 charms and leave the rest plain - it creates a sleek, very pretty look. Others fill the whole bracelet. Both look great; it's really up to you.

And practically, how does it clip on?

The charm doesn't go in from the top. It slides in from the side. That's THE thing no one tells you, and it's why it's tricky the first time.

Lay the bracelet flat, with the front facing the table. Spread the two charms next to it apart a little, then slide it. It comes out on its own.

Honestly, get the charm tool. It costs €1.99 and does the job in 5 seconds instead of tearing up your nails. All our customers who change their designs often have one.

We've put together a complete guide with the exact steps if you want the details.

The vocabulary, quickly explained

The word What it means
Charm The small square with a design. 9 mm. The foundation of everything.
Plain charm A very simple charm with no design. It's what fills your base to start with.
Double charm A charm that's twice as wide (18 mm). Perfect for phrases and large designs.
Dangle A charm with a small element that dangles and moves when you move.
The base Your starter bracelet, already filled with plain charms.

And that's it, now you know everything. No need to know more.

Italian charm, Italian Charm, Italian bracelet: are they the same thing?

Yes, it's exactly the same thing. And it's normal to get confused, because everyone calls it something different. 😅

  • Italian Charm - the original name, in English. It's the one you see most often on TikTok.
  • Italian charm (or Italian charms in the plural) - the English translation. Same product, same 9 mm size.
  • Italian bracelet - when we're talking about the entire bracelet rather than a single charm.
  • Italian charm bracelet - the longer, more precise version.
  • Modular bracelet - because you put it together yourself, charm by charm.

⚠️ Watch out for a common trap: if you just search for “Italian bracelet” on Google, you'll also find gold bracelets with Italian-style links, which have nothing to do with it. To find the right product, search instead for “Italian charms” or “Italian charm bracelet”.

Why do we call it “Italian”?

Because it originated in Italy, near Florence, in the late 1980s. A guy had the idea of replacing dangling charms with small flat squares that link together - and it took the world by storm.

The story is really cool (the founder was an ice cream maker before making jewelry 🍦). We tell you the whole story here.

What is it made of? Doesn't it tarnish?

Our charms are made of stainless steel. In practical terms, that means:

  • ✅ It won't rust
  • ✅ It won't tarnish
  • ✅ It won't turn green on your wrist
  • ✅ You can sweat with it, go swimming, and forget it under the shower
  • ✅ Suitable for sensitive skin

It matters because it’s what makes the difference between a €5 piece of jewelry that lasts for years and a €5 piece of jewelry that turns green in one summer.

“Wait, who are you, exactly?”

It’s the question we get asked most, and that’s perfectly normal. Italian Charms France is a French store 🇫🇷 - French-speaking customer service, 48-72h delivery in France, 3× interest-free payments, and a 14-day money-back guarantee. More than 220,000 charms sold to date.

How many charms should you add?

There are no rules. But here’s what looks good:

  • 3 to 5 charms - the minimalist style. You keep plenty of plain charms between the designs, creating a very clean and understated look.
  • 6 to 10 charms - the perfect middle ground, and what most of our customers choose. Enough to tell a story, with enough breathing room for it to stand out.
  • The full bracelet - just charms with designs, no plain charms. The collector’s style. This is the one we see most on TikTok.

Two tips that make all the difference:

Don’t go in every direction with the colors. Three color families max, otherwise it becomes hard to read.

Put a larger charm in the middle - a double charm or a pendant. It gives the eye a focal point, and everything else can be arranged around it.

Who is it for?

The vast majority of our customers are between 13 and 21 years old. And almost 2 out of 3 orders are gifts - often parents giving one to their daughter, or friends getting the same one for each other.

Honestly, there’s no age limit. We have moms getting back into bracelets at the same time as their daughters because they had one in 2003. And for boys, we have a selection of more masculine charms that works really well.

The three uses we see most often:

The memory bracelet. One charm for each trip, milestone, or important person. After two years, your bracelet practically tells your life story.

The bracelet that keeps changing. In summer, you switch to shells and palm trees; in winter, you go back to something understated. Change 3 charms and you have a new bracelet.

The gift bracelet. You give the base first, then a charm for every birthday. It’s the gift that never gets duplicated.

Where do you start?

  1. Choose your color: gold or silver. Stick to one for your first bracelet; you can mix them later.
  2. Get a base for €19.90.
  3. Choose 5 to 8 charms. If you don't know where to start, check out the best-sellers - that's what other people choose most often.
  4. Add the €1.99 tool. You'll thank us.

And one more thing: when you buy 10 charms, the base is free. So a fully loaded bracelet costs you around €50-60.

✨ Build my bracelet

The questions we get asked all the time

Can I shower with it?

Yes, stainless steel is not affected by water. What damages it over time is shower gel, perfume, and chlorine. If you forget to take it off in the shower, it's not a problem at all; just rinse it with clean water from time to time.

Does it really not tarnish?

No. Stainless steel doesn't tarnish or rust. After several years, the gold plating may fade slightly in areas that rub, as with all gold-plated jewelry - but we're talking years, not months.

What size should I choose?

Measure your wrist with a tape measure (or a strip of paper) and add 1 cm. Our bases fit most wrists, and you can always remove or add a charm to adjust the fit. The details are here.

Will charms from other brands fit my bracelet?

Yes, in most cases, as long as they're 9 mm wide. It's a standard size in the world of Italian Charms, and no brand locks it down. You're not stuck with one brand.

And do Pandora charms work?

No, it's completely different. A Pandora bead slides onto a bangle, while an Italian Charm clips onto the side. We compare the two in detail here.

Is it fragile?

Not at all. And even if your bracelet breaks one day, you never need to buy your charms again - you simply put them on a new base.
